Rwandan Peacekeepers in South Sudan Decorated with Medals of Honor for Outstanding Service
Rwandan peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) were decorated with medals of honor in recognition of their outstanding service and professionalism in peacekeeping operations.
The medal parade was held at the Rwanbatt-3 base in Durupi, Central Equatoria State, where members of the Rwanda Battalion Three (Rwanbatt-3) and the Rwanda Aviation Unit (RAU-13) were honored.
Presiding over the ceremony, UNMISS Force Commander Lt Gen Mohan Subramanian commended the Rwandan peacekeepers for their discipline, dedication, and significant contribution to maintaining peace and stability in South Sudan. He also noted that Rwanda remains among the top five troop-contributing countries worldwide to UN peacekeeping missions.
Lt Gen Subramanian further praised Rwanbatt-3 and RAU-13 for their professionalism, teamwork, and vital role in fulfilling the UNMISS mandate to protect civilians and foster peace.
Col Léodomir Uwizeyimana, Commander of Rwanbatt-3 and Rwanda’s Contingent Commander in UNMISS, thanked the UN mission leadership for their continued support. He reaffirmed Rwanda’s commitment to upholding its strong legacy in peacekeeping by ensuring the protection of civilians and promoting peace wherever they are deployed.
He emphasized that effective collaboration with fellow peacekeepers, local communities, and partners is key to fulfilling their mandate, underscoring that Rwandan troops will continue to uphold the nation’s reputation as a trusted contributor to global peace efforts.
The ceremony was attended by senior UNMISS officials and members of the Rwandan community living in South Sudan. It featured a colorful military parade, traditional performances, and martial arts displays showcasing the discipline, culture, and professionalism of the Rwanda Defence Force.
