First Lady of Rwanda, Jeannette Kagame, has been honoured with the FIGO Distinguished Recognition Award in Women’s Health for her outstanding contribution to the advancement of women’s health, rights, and empowerment.

The award, presented by the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO), was conferred during the organization’s 25th World Congress held in Cape Town, South Africa, on October 5, 2025. Rwanda’s Ambassador to South Africa, Emmanuel Hategeka, received the award on her behalf.

In its citation, FIGO commended Mrs. Kagame’s more than two decades of dedicated service to improving the lives of women and girls through initiatives that promote health, education, and gender equality.

Through the Imbuto Foundation, which she founded, Mrs. Kagame has championed the education of girls, mentorship of young women, and the creation of opportunities for youth to lead solutions to challenges such as teenage pregnancies and reproductive health concerns.

FIGO noted that her visionary leadership and unwavering commitment have inspired transformation, not only in Rwanda but also across Africa and beyond, showcasing how First Ladies can play a pivotal role in driving social progress and improving community well-being.

“This award is a well-deserved recognition of a leader whose compassion and vision have profoundly impacted women’s health and empowerment,” FIGO stated.

Founded in 1954, FIGO brings together 142 national associations of obstetricians and gynecologists from around the world. Since introducing the awards in 1997, the federation has honoured 178 women globally for their distinguished contributions to women’s health and rights.
