Kenyan President William Ruto has expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of 25 people in a tragic road accident on the Kisumu–Kakamega highway after a bus carrying mourners from a funeral overturned and plunged into a ditch on Friday evening.

The bus was traveling from Kakamega to Kisumu when the driver lost control near the Coptic Roundabout, a known accident blackspot. The crash claimed the lives of 10 men, 10 women, and a 10-year-old girl. In total, 25 people died  including four who later died in hospital due to their injuries.

Twenty-nine others were injured, five of them critically. All injured passengers are receiving treatment at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.

This tragedy has reignited concerns over road safety in Kenya, where speeding, reckless driving, and poor road infrastructure frequently cause fatal accidents. The crash comes amid a week of multiple deadly incidents, including an air ambulance crash near Nairobi that killed six people and a train-bus collision that killed eight.

Fredrick Ouma Oluga, Principal Secretary for Medical Services, confirmed that several victims are in critical condition and undergoing intensive treatment.

President Ruto described the crash as a national tragedy, saying: “It is a heartbreaking loss. Our country has lost people of great value. Authorities must investigate the cause of the accident and implement stronger road safety measures.”

With investigations underway, the Kisumu–Kakamega crash is expected to increase pressure on Kenyan authorities to enforce stricter traffic laws and improve road infrastructure to reduce the country’s high number of road fatalities.
