President Kagame Received Qatar’s Amir for a Two-Day Working Visit
President Paul Kagame on Thursday, 20 November 2025, received His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Amir of the State of Qatar, who arrived in Rwanda for a two-day working visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations.
The Amir was welcomed at Kigali International Airport in Kanombe by President Kagame and senior government officials.
The visit comes at a time when Rwanda and Qatar enjoy a steadily growing partnership across key sectors such as investment, tourism, aviation, infrastructure development, and security cooperation. Over the past years, the two countries have signed multiple agreements designed to accelerate socio-economic growth, including Qatar Airways’ expanding operations in Rwanda, the development of Bugesera Smart City, and support to sports and youth initiatives.
During his stay, Sheikh Tamim is expected to hold high-level talks with President Kagame focused on advancing ongoing joint projects and identifying new areas of collaboration that can boost economic opportunities for both countries. Officials have indicated that additional cooperation agreements particularly in technology, industry, and strategic investment are likely to be signed.
A significant highlight of the partnership between Rwanda and Qatar is the development of Bugesera International Airport, where Qatar holds a 60 percent stake. Once completed, the new airport is projected to handle more than 14 million passengers annually, positioning Rwanda as a major aviation hub in the region.
The Amir is also expected to visit some of Rwanda’s flagship development sites, including Akagera National Park, Kigali Arena, and the construction works of Bugesera International Airport sites that showcase the country’s progress in tourism, sports infrastructure, and major national projects.
Sheikh Tamim’s visit is widely viewed as a reaffirmation of the strong and expanding cooperation between Qatar and Rwanda, with promising prospects for increased investment and long-term development impact for citizens of both nations.
