During his three-day visit to Rwanda, Mozambique’s Minister of Defence, Maj. Gen. Cristóvão Artur Chume, praised Rwanda for its support in tackling terrorism in Cabo Delgado Province and for fostering broader cooperation that benefits both nations.

Maj. Gen. Chume highlighted the joint military efforts of the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), Rwanda National Police, and Mozambican security forces in restoring peace and stability. These operations enabled displaced communities to return home and socio-economic activities to resume.

“Our countries face the common challenge of terrorism, and we must work together to overcome it,” he said.

Since July 2021, at the request of the Mozambican Government, Rwanda has deployed troops and police officers to support counter-terrorism operations in Cabo Delgado. The collaboration successfully removed insurgents from previously occupied areas, allowing thousands of civilians to reclaim their homes.

Beyond counter-terrorism, Maj. Gen. Chume emphasized that Rwanda and Mozambique continue to cooperate in broader military areas, including training programs and intelligence sharing. He also thanked Rwanda for its contributions to civilian protection and development initiatives.

During the visit, the Mozambican delegation, accompanied by Chief of the Mozambican Armed Forces Maj. Gen. André Rafael Mahunguane and Inspector General of Police CP Fabião Pedro Nhancololo, visited RDF Headquarters.

They met Rwanda’s Minister of Defence Juvenal Marizamunda and the RDF Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Mubarakh Muganga, discussing regional security dynamics and Rwanda’s role in promoting peace across Africa.

The delegation also paid tribute to victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi at the Kigali Genocide Memorial and toured the Campaign Against Genocide Museum to learn about Rwanda’s liberation struggle.

Maj. Gen. Chume told the media that the visit focused on strengthening bilateral defence cooperation and consolidating achievements in peace and security for the benefit of both countries.
