Minister Bizimana visits development projects in Rusizi after closing training for genocide convicts
On Wednesday, following the completion of a training program at Nyamasheke Prison for convicts who had served their sentences for genocide crimes, Minister of National Unity and Civic Engagement, Dr. Jean Damascène Bizimana, who also serves as the District Imboni (champion) for Rusizi, joined local leaders on a tour of key development projects in the district.
The Minister first visited the modern Rusizi abattoir, which has started operating at 45% of its full capacity. He also inspected the Nyagatare clean water supply system, scheduled to be launched in January 2026.
Once operational, this system will provide safe drinking water to over 21,000 residents, seven schools in the sectors of Gihundwe and Nkanka, one health centre, three health posts, and the Nkanka Sector office.
After the site visits, Minister Bizimana held a meeting with the Rusizi District leadership to review progress in activities marking the ongoing “Unity and Resilience Month.” Discussions focused on sustaining the culture of unity and collective responsibility while ensuring that development projects improve citizens’ wellbeing.
Minister Bizimana commended the district for its efforts to combine social cohesion with tangible development, noting that unity and resilience are the foundations upon which sustainable progress must be built.
