He stole the TV while people were watching! – Testimony of a Former Drug Addict
Ntare Olivier, a 32-year-old man living in Nyamirambo Sector, Nyarugenge District, says he used various types of drugs for five years and is thankful to God for helping him quit.
In an interview with UKWELITIMES, he said he can never forget the terrible things he used to do while using drugs.
He confessed to having used multiple drugs, including marijuana, Mugo (a form of heroin), cocaine, and khat (Mayirungi), stating that he never missed a day without taking them.
He said: “Listen, I used Mugo a lot — it was even my favorite, more than marijuana. I only used Mayirungi when I had a lot of money. But what I can tell you is, drugs are terrible.”
He continued:
“Drugs are evil — people should pray for those who use them. Can you imagine a time I entered a living room at home where my parents and siblings were watching the news and I turned off the TV, planning to sell it, thinking no one was watching me?”
He further revealed that he often stole different items to sell and get money to buy Mugo.
“You think someone using Mugo without a job in Africa won't steal? Mugo is expensive. When you can't afford it, you start selling all your belongings, and when those are gone, you move on to stealing things from your family. After that, you begin stealing from the community — that's how it goes.”
He Had Unprotected Sex
Ntare also added that when someone is addicted to drugs or using them, they don't even remember to use protection during sex.
“Do you know I lived as if I were in another world? I didn’t use condoms. Sometimes I would find myself sleeping with prostitutes without one. Sometimes the condom would tear and I’d feel hopeless — a few days later, I’d forget about it. I’m telling you, Mugo is no joke.”
He went on to say that he was later caught by security forces with marijuana and taken to Iwawa Rehabilitation Center, which eventually helped him quit drugs for good.
“While I was in Iwawa, I reflected on my life and made a decision. It wasn’t easy, but I quit. What really helped me was distancing myself from the people I used to do drugs with.”
