Residents of Ngara Cell in Bumbogo Sector, Gasabo District, say they are being disturbed by a man named Gatorano Edson, who has set up chicken coops between residential houses.

These residents, particularly from Birembo Village, say they want this individual to move his poultry farming operations away from residential homes, as the smell of chicken feed and manure is overwhelming.

They say they don’t understand why Gatorano is allowed to keep poultry in a residential area, especially since it is not permitted by law.

One man who lives near the poultry farmer said, “We can't sleep here. The chickens make noise all night long, and the smell from those coops alone is a serious issue because people will start getting sick.”

He added that he doesn’t understand why the local authorities allow this man to farm in a residential area when there are zones designated specifically for farming and livestock keeping.

A woman also commented, “The authorities don't care because if anyone complains, he just gives them a chicken or a tray of eggs, and the matter is forgotten. They never follow up.”

The farmer, who owns over 600 chickens, told UKWELITIMES that no resident has ever directly told him that his farming is a nuisance.

He said, “This is the first time I’m hearing this. I know it's not allowed, but the issue is that I built these coops a long time ago when the area was still designated for farming. Now it has been changed to a residential zone.”

He added that he is fully aware that his poultry farming is now not permitted in that location and emphasized that he is actively looking for a new place to relocate his poultry.

We tried to contact the Bumbogo Sector Administration to find out what action they are taking regarding this issue, but we were unable to reach them.
