During a lackluster Oscars weekend, "Captain America: Brave New World" remains at the top of the box office
On Sunday, when Hollywood's focus was primarily on the Oscars, studio estimates indicate that the most recent Disney-Marvel sale took in an additional $15 million.
In one of the biggest second-week declines for a Marvel film, Anthony Mackie's "Captain America: Brave New World" fell to $28.2 million last week after opening strong at over $120 million during a three-day weekend last month. Since its release, it has brought in $163.7.
Many critics and viewers criticized it for not delivering the Marvel reboot that some had hoped for. Now, May's "Thunderbolts" and July's "Fantastic Four: First Steps" are in charge of that mission. However, "Captain America" won't have much competition until March, so it might hold the top spot for some time.
Focus Features' "Last Breath," the only noteworthy new movie of the weekend, brought in a meager $7.8 million. A regular deep-sea diving trip goes horribly wrong when a young diver becomes lost around 300 feet below the surface in this adventure film, which is based on a true event and stars Woody Harrelson, Simi Liu, and Chris Lemons.
Lindsey Bahr of The Associated Press praised the "white-knuckle experience" and "pure suspense and anxiety" it brings, and it received positive reviews.
Oz Perkins' "The Monkey," which earned $6.4 million for a two-week total of $24.6 million, came in at number three. It's one of the best starts for independent distributor Neon, whose movie "Anora" and director Sean Baker might have a big impact at the Oscars on Sunday.
Perkins and Neon have collaborated on another successful low-budget film, "The Monkey." Last year, Neon's "Longlegs" earned $126.9 million worldwide.
With $4.5 million in its third weekend, "Paddington in Peru" came in fourth place with $31.4 million overall.
