Rwanda receives 208 nationals freed from FDLR captivity in DR Congo
Rwanda on Friday welcomed home 208 of its citizens who returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo after being held by the FDLR armed group.
The group was received in Rubavu District by local officials, including district mayor Prosper Mulindwa. Among those repatriated were 145 children, 54 women, and nine men. They crossed back into the country through the main La Corniche border post, where transport had been arranged to take them to the Nyarushishi transit center in Rusisi District for short-term assistance and orientation.
Their return follows resolutions reached during a tripartite meeting involving Rwanda, DR Congo, and the UN refugee agency held in Addis Ababa on July 24, 2025.
Local authorities said the returnees were given guidance aimed at helping them reintegrate peacefully into society, including messages encouraging unity and warning against divisive ideology. Officials noted that many had previously been exposed to harmful teachings while in captivity and urged them to build new lives grounded in social cohesion and development.
They were also assured of government support upon completion of registration. Adults over 18 will receive an initial reintegration allowance of $188, while minors will receive $113. Each person will additionally be provided with basic food supplies valued at 45,000 Rwandan francs.
Many of the returnees were seen smiling upon arrival, expressing relief and hope as they set foot back home after their ordeal.
