Burundi President Ndayishimiye sacks senior police colonel over alleged rice embezzlement scandal
Burundi’s President, Évariste Ndayishimiye, has dismissed Colonel Gérard Nijimbere over allegations of embezzling rice meant for police officers. The decision took immediate effect on February 19, 2026, and is seen as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to combat corruption and enforce accountability within state institutions.
Burundi’s President, Évariste Ndayishimiye, has dismissed a senior police officer, Colonel Gérard Nijimbere, over allegations that he embezzled rice intended to feed police officers.
The decision, signed on February 19, 2026, follows a report submitted by the Minister of Public Security, Léonidas Ndaruzaniye. An official document confirming the dismissal states that Colonel Nijimbere, identified by service number OPN 0403, was removed from the Burundi National Police for misappropriating food supplies meant for officers.
“Colonel Gérard Nijimbere has been dismissed from the Burundi National Police for stealing rice intended for the feeding of police officers,” the statement reads.
The dismissal took effect immediately on the day it was signed, meaning that as of February 19, 2026, Col. Nijimbere is no longer authorized to serve within the Burundi National Police.
The move comes as the Burundian government continues to project a firm stance against corruption and the misuse of public resources. Since assuming office in June 2020 following the death of former president Pierre Nkurunziza, President Ndayishimiye has repeatedly emphasized the importance of integrity, accountability, and discipline within public institutions. In several public addresses, he has urged state officials and civil servants to uphold transparency, particularly in the management of public funds and resources.
The dismissal of Col. Nijimbere is widely viewed as part of broader efforts to curb misconduct that could undermine the functioning and credibility of security institutions.
The decision has sparked widespread debate among Burundians, especially on social media platforms. Many have welcomed the move, arguing that taking firm action against a high-ranking officer sends a strong message that no one is above the law.
Others, however, have expressed concern that the case may reflect deeper systemic issues, suggesting that there could be additional officials involved in the alleged misappropriation of state resources who have yet to be held accountable. Some have called for expanded investigations to determine whether others were implicated.
As of now, the Office of the President has not disclosed the exact period during which the alleged offense occurred, the quantity of rice reportedly embezzled, or whether further legal proceedings including possible court action will follow.
The dismissal of Colonel Gérard Nijimbere marks a significant development within Burundi’s police force. While it signals the government’s stated commitment to combating corruption and enforcing accountability, further details are still awaited regarding the full scope of the case and its potential legal consequences.
