The Western Regional Police Commander claims armed goons were ferried from Nairobi to Kakamega ahead of Senator Edwin Sifuna’s rally, citing intelligence reports. Police warn they will not tolerate lawlessness, while Sifuna insists the event will proceed as planned despite rising tensions.

The Western Regional Police Commander, Issa Mahmoud, has alleged that Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna intends to transport armed individuals to a planned political rally in Kakamega town without formally notifying security authorities.

Addressing the media ahead of the event, Mahmoud claimed that intelligence reports indicated that some individuals travelling from Nairobi to attend the rally could be armed with firearms.

“We have received reports that people coming from Nairobi will be armed with firearms. That is what we have been told about the group planning to hold a rally tomorrow,” he stated.

The commander said the alleged security concerns explain why police had not received any official communication regarding the rally, which is expected to take place in Amalemba, Kakamega County. He noted that information about the event had primarily been circulating on social media, with no organiser formally seeking security clearance or police support.

Mahmoud, however, maintained that the police remain ready to facilitate lawful public gatherings, provided due process is followed. He emphasised that law enforcement officers would not tolerate any acts of disorder.

“Wherever there is a problem, the police will provide a solution and take action where necessary. Our role is to maintain peace to the greatest extent possible. We will use all available measures to ensure order and will not tolerate any form of lawlessness,” he said.

The regional police boss further warned that authorities would deploy sufficient personnel to guarantee security in the area.

“I have sufficient police personnel, and if more are needed, additional officers will be deployed,” he added.

The remarks come amid rising political tensions after Sifuna’s “Linda Mwananchi” convoy was reportedly attacked at Kona Mbaya trading centre while en route to Kakamega County. According to reports, unknown individuals hurled stones at one of the vehicles.

In response, Senator Sifuna has maintained that he will proceed with the scheduled rally, insisting that he will not be intimidated or pressured into cancelling the event.

The situation remains under close watch as security agencies and political leaders exchange claims ahead of the planned gathering.
