Rwanda Defence Force leadership visits Cabo Delgado Province to review joint security operations
The Army Chief of Staff of the Rwanda Defence Force, Major General Vincent Nyakarundi, has begun an official visit to Cabo Delgado Province in Mozambique, as part of ongoing efforts to assess joint military operations and strengthen bilateral security cooperation.
While in the coastal city of Pemba, the delegation met with Major General André Rafael Mahunguane, Army Commander of the Mozambican Armed Forces. Their discussions focused on evaluating the current security situation in Cabo Delgado and reviewing future operational plans. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to close coordination and joint action aimed at achieving shared security objectives.
The delegation also paid a courtesy visit to provincial governor Valige Tauabo, who provided a detailed briefing on the prevailing security environment and stabilization progress across the province.
Since 2021, Rwanda has deployed its security forces to Cabo Delgado to help restore order after terrorist groups destabilized the region, killing civilians and forcing many residents to flee their homes.
Following the deployment, security improved significantly in several areas, allowing displaced communities to return and economic and social activities to resume. Key infrastructure, including electricity services, was restored in locations that had previously been severely affected.
In August 2025, Rwanda and Mozambique further reinforced their partnership by renewing bilateral agreements on investment cooperation and counter-terrorism, a move that strengthened their joint commitment to sustaining security gains, enhancing development, and ensuring long-term stability in the province.
The visit reflects continued collaboration between the two countries’ security institutions and their shared determination to eliminate terrorism and consolidate peace in northern Mozambique.
