Rwandan peacekeepers serving under the United Nations mission in the Central African Republic have delivered free medical services to inmates at a prison in Bria, in a humanitarian initiative aimed at supporting civilian welfare beyond their core security duties.

The outreach was conducted by troops from the Rwanda Battle Group 8 contingent operating under MINUSCA in Bria, located in the Central African Republic.

The medical team worked alongside specialists from Rwanda’s Level Two Hospital unit to address a wide range of health needs among inmates.

Services provided included general medical consultations, women’s health care, dental treatment, and other essential clinical support. The initiative formed part of the peacekeepers’ broader mandate to protect civilians and promote community well-being.

The event was attended by the prison director, Mahamat Adoum Salle; the head of the Rwandan military hospital contingent, Christian Mukwesi; and the commander of Rwanda Battle Group 8, David Ngabonziza.

Salle expressed appreciation to both MINUSCA leadership and the Rwanda Defence Force for their continued support, describing the UN mission as a reliable partner in humanitarian activities.

He highlighted persistent challenges inmates face in accessing medication, noting that prescribed drugs are sometimes difficult to obtain.

The activity underscored the expanding role of peacekeeping forces, demonstrating how humanitarian engagement, solidarity, and respect for human rights remain central to their mission even in challenging environments.
