Rwanda and GiveDirectly sign five-year deal to accelerate poverty reduction
The Government of Rwanda and the international nonprofit GiveDirectly have signed a five-year framework agreement aimed at fast-tracking poverty reduction efforts through a joint financing mechanism known as the Poverty Acceleration Co-Financing Basket Fund.
Under the partnership, the two sides plan to mobilize more than $150 million (over Frw 218 billion) to support anti-poverty programs targeting districts with the highest levels of deprivation. The initiative aligns with Rwanda’s second National Strategy for Transformation (NST2), which seeks to significantly reduce poverty nationwide.
GiveDirectly, an NGO known for providing direct cash transfers to low-income households, will continue working with local authorities and national institutions to channel funds straight to beneficiaries using mobile money.
The approach is designed to help families invest in practical income-generating activities such as livestock rearing, small businesses, or home improvements.
Since launching operations in Rwanda in 2016, the organization has distributed more than Frw 63 billion to over 147,000 households across 17 districts in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government.
According to program data, about 98% of recipients have used the funds for productive investments intended to lift themselves out of extreme poverty.
Officials say the renewed partnership will scale up these efforts, with a focus on empowering vulnerable communities to achieve sustainable economic progress and long-term self-reliance.
