Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva held strategic discussions with the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Rwanda, Belén Calvo Uyarra, aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation.

The talks, hosted at the Prime Minister’s office on February 17, 2026, were also attended by Minister of Finance and Economic Planning Yussuf Murangwa, underlining the economic and development significance of EU-Rwanda partnerships.

The discussions focused on deepening collaboration in areas such as sustainable development, health, green energy, and critical raw materials.

Rwanda and the EU’s partnership is robust and evolving, supported by over €900 million in Team Europe investments (2021–2027). Key initiatives include raw material value chain partnerships in 2026 and continued support for health and socio-economic projects.

In recent years, the EU has supported Rwanda’s development through several high-impact initiatives. In October 2025, €95 million was provided to support BioNTEch’s vaccine operations in Rwanda.

In November 2025, Rwanda, the EU, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) launched the “Refugee Socio-Economic Graduation and Livelihood Opportunities in Rwanda” project.

This three-year initiative will empower 3,200 refugee households and 800 host Rwandan families to achieve self-sufficiency and access essential resources.

Following the talks, Prime Minister Nsengiyumva and Ambassador Calvo Uyarra reaffirmed their commitment to consolidating the strong partnership between Rwanda and the European Union, focusing on innovation, sustainable growth, and inclusive development.
