Gen. Mamadi Doumbouya Wins Guinea Presidential Election with Over 86% of Votes
Guinea-Conakry’s transitional leader, General Mamadi Doumbouya, has won the presidential election held on December 28, 2025, securing 86.72% of the votes, according to provisional results announced by the country’s election commission.
Doumbouya, who has led the country since seizing power in September 2021, faced eight other candidates, including former government officials and opposition figures. His closest rival, Yéro Baldé of the FRONDEG party (Front démocratique de Guinée), received 6.51% of the votes.
President of the Electoral Commission, Djanabou Toure, reported on December 30 that voter turnout reached 80.95% of the 6.7 million registered voters. While these results are provisional, the Supreme Court of Guinea-Conakry is expected to confirm the official outcome within eight days.
Doumbouya rose to power after ousting former President Alpha Condé in 2021. At the time, he had promised that neither he nor his fellow military leaders would immediately run for the presidency. However, a referendum in September 2025 allowed a constitutional amendment, granting Doumbouya the right to contest the elections. The new constitution also extended the presidential term from five to seven years.
With this victory, Gen. Doumbouya is set to begin a seven-year term, marking a significant consolidation of his leadership in Guinea-Conakry.
