Rwandan troops serving under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) have received high praise from senior mission leadership for their professionalism, discipline, and commitment to civilian protection.

During a visit on February 17, 2026, to the Rwandan Battalion deployed in Juba, Force Commander Mohammad Iqbal Hossain applauded the contingent for maintaining strong operational standards and exemplary conduct in the field.

He was welcomed by Battalion Commander Innocent Rwaka Muhirwe, who briefed him on ongoing activities, highlighting the unit’s primary focus on safeguarding civilians and supporting stability efforts.

The commander emphasized that protecting vulnerable populations remains the core mandate of the mission in South Sudan and urged troops to strictly adhere to rules governing the use of force, stressing restraint and professionalism in complex security situations.

He also assured them of continued support from mission leadership to address operational challenges.

Reflecting on his recent visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, the Force Commander underscored the moral responsibility peacekeepers carry in preventing violence and protecting lives, noting that such historical lessons reinforce the importance of their mandate.

Earlier deployments have also been recognized internationally. In 2024, members of a Rwandan battalion and aviation contingent were awarded UN service medals for outstanding performance before completing their rotation.

Rwandan peacekeepers continue to be regarded as among the most reliable contributors to global peace support operations, earning consistent commendation from UN officials and host communities alike.
