Rwandans in India Mark the 32nd National Heroes Day
Rwandans living in India, together with those in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, joined the Rwandan Embassy accredited to India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and the Maldives to commemorate the 32nd National Heroes Day.
The commemoration took place on 8 February 2026, a date agreed upon following consultations between the Embassy and Rwandan students, most of whom are in these countries for academic purposes, to ensure maximum participation.
The event was held in a hybrid format, with some participants physically present at the Rwandan Embassy in New Delhi, while others from different regions of India, as well as from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, joined virtually.
Rwandan students and community members in distant locations connected through a digital platform coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Rwanda, enabling broad participation in the national event.
In her address, Ambassador Jacqueline Mukangira highlighted Rwanda’s history of heroism and the core values that underpin National Heroes Day, explaining its significance in preserving the country’s legacy of sacrifice and patriotism.
She urged the youth to uphold the values of bravery, integrity and unity, and to safeguard the achievements made possible by Rwanda’s heroes and the leadership of the country.
The Ambassador further reflected on the injustices inflicted on Rwanda during the colonial era and the continuation of divisive ethnic politics in the post-colonial period, which ended with the liberation of the country by the RPF-Inkotanyi in 1994.
During an interactive session, participants were encouraged to contribute actively to Rwanda’s development. Ambassador Mukangira called on them to support the national campaign against cervical cancer, assuring them that clear mechanisms for contributions would soon be communicated.
The commemoration also featured contributions from participants based in India and Sri Lanka, who shared reflections on the importance of emulating Rwanda’s heroes who sacrificed their lives for the nation and those who continue to serve for a better, inclusive Rwanda.
Speakers advised fellow youth to remain committed to Rwandan values, demonstrate discipline and good conduct, avoid drug abuse, and prioritize their education.
The event concluded with a social session marked by fellowship and patriotic songs honoring Rwanda’s national heroes.
