President Paul Kagame urged young people enrolling at the Africa School of Governance (ASG) to believe in their capacity to transform the continent, instead of relying on external support.

He made the call on September 25, 2025, during the official launch of ASG’s first academic year. The new institution aims to prepare Africa’s next generation of leaders, and its inaugural intake includes 51 students from 14 African countries, alongside faculty members and senior officials.

ASG was founded on ideas initiated by President Kagame together with former Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn. Its mission is to equip young Africans with practical knowledge and leadership skills to drive sustainable development across the continent.

In his address, President Kagame emphasized the critical role of the youth in shaping Africa’s future. He called on them to dedicate themselves to their continent and focus on finding homegrown solutions rather than waiting for others to solve problems on their behalf.

“Africa deserves clear and focused learning, and that must be done by you, our youth, because you are our future,” he said.

He further urged the students to take responsibility, respect themselves, and value both their work and their countries of origin.

President Kagame noted that many of Africa’s challenges persist because its people have not put in sufficient effort to change them. He stressed that as the world advances in technology and the economy, Africa must keep pace or risk being left behind.

“Do not always ask from others more than what you seek within yourselves,” he reminded them.

He concluded by affirming that Africa’s true hope for transformation lies in its youth.

ASG’s Vice President for Academic Affairs, Amany El-Sharif, also addressed the gathering, affirming that the school will play a pivotal role in addressing the continent’s pressing challenges.

“You must build Africa’s future, striving to transform your knowledge and ideas into solutions,” he told the students.

He thanked ASG’s faculty and leadership, describing their efforts as a vital investment in Africa’s tomorrow.
