UCI Honors President Kagame for His Contribution to Cycling
The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has honored President Paul Kagame with a special medal in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the promotion of cycling and for helping Rwanda make history as the first African nation to host the Road World Championships.
The award was presented during a gala dinner held at the Kigali Convention Center on Saturday evening, attended by Prince Albert II of Monaco, UCI President David Lappartient, and other dignitaries.
In his remarks, Lappartient praised Rwanda for exceeding expectations in hosting the 2025 UCI Road World Championships.
“President Kagame has done so much to support cycling. The way Rwanda welcomed the global cycling family this week will never be forgotten,” he said, before handing the Head of State a medal and a champion’s jersey similar to those awarded to race winners.
President Kagame warmly accepted the honor, thanking UCI and all partners who made it possible for Rwanda to host this historic championship.
“I may not have raced, but I also won,” Kagame said, adding that the joy, unity, and energy seen in Kigali’s streets were a testament to the power of sport.
The evening was also marked by cultural performances from Rwanda’s national troupe Urukerereza, showcasing traditional songs and dances.
The Head of State underlined that investing in sports is essentially investing in the future of young people, as it offers them opportunities and strength to pursue their dreams. He assured the international cycling community that Rwanda will always remain a welcoming home for the sport on the African continent.
